WMS Feed - NGA-Earth provides an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Map Service (WMS) feed to connect to our imagery. The imagery viewed using this mechanism is the same imagery that can be seen using our MapApp Viewer and is provided to us by our Commercial Data Service. All the imagery is available to authorized military and federal government users ONLY, at the present only legacy Hurricane Katrina data is available to the general public.

The authorized military and federal government users URL is: NGA WMS Get Capabilities

There are many programs and services that can connect to our data using our WMS Feed. Some common free programs are Google Earth™, Dapple™, NASA's World Wind™, and ESRI ArcView™.

ESRI LogoUsing ESRI ArcIMS , add our WMS by:

  • Using desktop ArcExplorer
    • Start ArcExplorer
    • Click on 'Layer/WWW/Add Web Site'
    • Type in our WMS Feed URL and click OK
You will then see a list of web services from nga-earth.org. Some ArcIMS feature services are accessible to ArcGIS clients only. This occurs because feature streaming requires an intelligent client to translate the stream to create the geometries on the client side. In this case, you must use ArcCatalog or ArcMap.

  • Using ArcCatalog
    • start your ArcCatalog
    • with ArcCatalog 8.3, click on Internet Servers/Add Internet Servers, and type in our WMS Feed URL,
    • with ArcCatalog 9.0 or 9.1, click on GIS Servers/Add ArcIMS Server, and type in our WMS Feed URL,
    • you will then see a list of ArcIMS services from nga-earth.org. With ArcCatalog, you can click on each of those services one at a time. You can check both "image" services and "feature" services.

  • Using ArcMap
    • Open ArcMap
    • Select 'File'
    • Select 'Add Data'
    • With ArcGIS version 8.3, select Internet Server/Add Internet Server option, the type in our WMS Feed URL
    • With ArcGIS version 9.0, select GIS Server/Add ArcIMS Server option, the type in our WMS Feed URL
    • A list of ArcIMS services from our WMS Feed URL will be displayed. With ArcMap, you can check both "image" services and "feature" services and loading multiple web services at the same time.
